Fur flies in fluoridation controversy

Fluoridation of public water is either one of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century – as Gordon Empey of the state Oral Health Program told the McMinnville City Council Tuesday – or forced medication with a potentially toxic substance – as opponents maintained.

McMinnville has been fluoridating its water for decades, after receiving a mandate to do so at the polls.

Resident Jo McIntyre thinks it’s time that decision was revisited. She is leading a campaign to persuade the city to put a new referendum on the ballot.

Over the course of the three-hour hearing, 33 people testified on the merits of fluoridation and, in the course of that, the wisdom of a referendum.
